Data Rivets

Hi, I’m Tom. I’ve worked in enterprise software and data for almost two decades now, with the majority of that time in the healthcare industry. I’ve had jobs implementing, developing, integrating, product managing, project managing, customizing, buying, selling, marketing, using, teaching, and analyzing data from software.

Over the years, I’ve come to believe that building software for enterprises and getting companies to effectively use software and data are genuinely hard, fascinating problems to spend your time working on.

There are everyday puzzles to solve…Why isn’t this code working? How can I figure out what these people actually need to do their jobs? Why does this dashboard not match that report?

There are big picture problems to think about…Why is it so hard to make software for people to do their jobs? Why do companies build software the way they do? Why is getting accurate data about your own company such an elusive problem?

And there are even more interesting problems when you layer all of the complexity of the healthcare industry onto software and data…Why is it so hard for health systems to share data with one another? Why aren’t EHRs more usable to clinicians? Why haven’t advances in technology done more to further medical research?

I write here about these kinds of problems; mostly where software, data, and healthcare collide.
